Brandon had July 5th off from work, so we decided to put our annual Aquarium pass to good use and drove up north for the day.

Okinawa has one major expressway, running from Nago to below Naha. We've heard all sorts of amazing stories about how it cuts down travel time and that it has practically mythical speed limit of *gasp* 80 KPH (to put that into perpective, that's only 49.7 mph.) The government is currently running an experiment and has made most of the expressway free for a limited time. We decided this would be the perfect opportunity to find out how it feels to drive over 60 KPH (37 mph), our normal top speed, for the first time since we've lived on the island.
Happy Independence Day, everyone! We celebrated at the Torii festival on Saturday. Huge, American-style hamburgers were on the menu for lunch. I made it through half of mine (about the same amount as a normal-sized hamburger would be) before deferring to my wonderful hubby.
Saturday we packed a lunch and drove up to Torii Beach. (Yes, we know we have a beach three blocks away, but that one is a public beach. Torii is on base and we rarely have to share the beach with anyone else.) It was partly cloudy and very humid. When the sun would peek out from behind the clouds, we were very happy the water was warm enough not to cause my teeth to chatter, but cool enough to feel refreshing. That being said, there wasn't a great deal of water to be had anywhere near the shore.
My wonderful hubby Brandon's birthday is just a few days after mine. He also shares his birthday with my best friend, Joy. Now that is something to celebrate! :)
I stopped at our local Japanese bakery and picked up a beautiful white cake for Brandon. They even did a beautiful "Happy Birthday, Brandon" inscription in hiragana and katakana on a shortbread cookie to make the cake even more special!
