Christmas Eve

The baker hard at work

The baker hard at work

Happy Christmas Eve, everyone!  I spent most of the day baking eight loaves of kuchen (my wonderful husband washed the dishes for me, multiple times today to help out.)  We're looking forward to eating kuchen Christmas morning while we open gifts.

Pumpkin cookies

Pumpkin-shaped sour cream cutout cookies.

Pumpkin-shaped sour cream cutout cookies.

My wonderful husband doesn't like pumpkin (I KNOW - I couldn't believe it either!), so I compromised.  I made pumpkin-shaped (thank you for the cookie cutter, Daddy!) Gramma's Sour Cream Cutout Cookies and tinted the frosting orange.  Happy early Thanksgiving, everyone!

Halloween Cookies

As part of my on-going "Dessert Diplomacy" efforts, I made these cute Halloween spider cookies.  They are frosted and decorated Double Chocolate Chunk Cookies.  Brandon says they taste good.  (I don't like chocolate cookies, so I've only sampled the frosting, which I can say tastes "delicious!")

Grill Sergeant

Delicious!

Delicious!

Brandon broke out his new grill for a test run last night, grilling us up some tasty cheeseburgers, complete with Jack Daniel's BBQ Sauce!  Yummy!  We bought him the Fiesta gas grill during the base's Father's Day sale and Gimli helped him put it together.  Errr, at least Gimli tried to help him put it together.  Brandon just didn't think having Gim walk all through the packaging and pieces and try to pick up parts to taste them was very helpful.  Huh!  Check out the assembly process in the Gallery.

Summer cupcakes!

Megumi and I decorated 48 cupcakes!

Megumi and I decorated 48 cupcakes!

Yesterday was a busy and exciting day!  We had a solar eclipse at 11am here to start things off.  It's the longest total solar eclipse we'll have in the 21st century.  On Okinawa we had 80% of a total solar eclipse, so for a little over 6 minutes we had some of the strangest sunlight I have ever seen in my life.  Due to the fact that it was only 80%, you had to have protective eyewear to actually watch the eclipse, but I enjoyed the eeiry light as I drove to pick up my friend, Megumi.  It was interesting to drive at that time, as everyone was standing outside their work buildings and looking to the sky...reminded me a lot of an "end of the world" movie.  And the lighting only enhanced that feel.  Overall, it was a cool experience.  I posted a pic of the neat ring that appeared in the clouds around the sun about 20 minutes before the eclipse.
